EDIT -- I just checked out both Bosch routers and the Ridgid. The Bosch routers do have separate chucks, but the Ridgid does use the adapter. Such plenty of yet worthy questions must make you scratch your head and look for their answers badly. This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. The 1617 takes a Type 4 Musclechuck and I urge you to try one.

That looks so nice I think all routers should come with that when new. I know it obviously works but how can it possibly get tight enough to hold a bit spinning at possibly 28,000 RPM's with just a small hex key? Any chance of accidentally stripping out the hex hole in it? I have a tendency to over tighten these type screws and either strip the socket they sit in or round off a hex wrench before I realize they're tight enough. I'm interested in the Bosch routers, 1617evs and mr23evs as a top choice, and would prefer two separate screw on collets, but if the adapters have a solid reputation then I guess they're ok. Seems I read that the Ridgid router from Home Depot has the adapter also. What do you all think of routers that use a 1/4 inch adapter for a second collet as opposed to two completely separate screw on collets? Seems the more parts you use the more chance a bit could fly loose. Duane, like you I used to prefer as few parts as possible. The 1617 is still my favorite router and since I test all types of bits I get collets for sizes most members would never use.
